WASHINGTON, United States: President Donald Trump is sending envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv this weekend with a new Trump Ukraine peace proposal aimed at ending the war.
Trump told reporters on Friday, September 4, that Witkoff and Kushner would carry what he described as a new idea for peace. He said he believed there was a chance the mission could produce progress.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was preparing to receive the two US envoys in Kyiv on Sunday, September 6. He said Ukraine wanted the talks to be constructive and focused on practical options for ending the conflict.
Zelenskyy also said Ukraine would refrain from striking Russia while the envoys were visiting.
The trip will be Witkoff and Kushner’s first visit to Ukraine since Trump returned to office. The pair previously met Russian President Vladimir Putin for about five hours in December 2025, but those discussions produced no breakthrough.

The renewed diplomatic effort comes as Russia and Ukraine continue exchanging long-range missile and drone attacks.

Hours before Trump announced the mission, a Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service in central Kyiv, Zelenskyy said. He described it as the first strike on the agency’s headquarters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
