The 2024 NBA Draft Lottery has concluded with the Atlanta Hawks clinching the first overall pick. Entering the lottery with only a 3% chance, the Hawks’ surprising victory positions them to make a crucial decision from a diverse talent pool in the 2024 class.
Following Atlanta, the Washington Wizards secured the second pick, the Houston Rockets the third, the San Antonio Spurs the fourth, and the Detroit Pistons rounded out the top five.
The remaining lottery teams were placed in the following order: Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs (again), Memphis Grizzlies, Utah Jazz, Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder (acquired from Houston), and Sacramento Kings.
The talent in this year’s draft includes top college prospects like UConn’s Stephon Castle and Donovan Clingan and Kentucky’s Rob Dillingham and Reed Sheppard. Other notable players are forwards Dalton Knecht from Tennessee and Cody Williams from Colorado. International players like French forward Zacharie Risacher, Serbian guard Nikola Topic, and French centre Alex Sarr also draw significant interest. G League Ignite’s Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland have emerged as strong contenders.
The NBA Draft Lottery operates differently from the NFL Draft. Instead of a direct order based on regular season records, the NBA uses a lottery for teams that missed the playoffs. These teams receive combinations of four numbers. The worse a team’s record, the more combinations they get. A lottery machine draws four ping pong balls to determine the team matchups, similar to lottery games like PowerBall. The first four picks are decided this way, with subsequent rounds ordered by inverse regular season standings.
