Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a 15% reduction in electricity prices on Thursday, slashing rates by Rs7.41 per unit for 40.3 million consumers.

The relief, spotlighting 35 million residential users, stems from seasonal tweaks and strategic government moves. The package also trims industrial rates by Rs7.69 per unit, aiming to spark economic growth.

The price drop breaks down into key parts: a Rs3.40 per unit quarterly tariff adjustment, a sub-Rs1 per unit monthly fuel cost cut, and a Rs1.71 per unit subsidy boost. Together, they slash domestic base rates from Rs48.70 to Rs34.37 per unit. Industries now pay Rs40.51 per unit, down from higher levels, while commercial users enjoy a 12% dip to Rs62.47 per unit with a Rs8.58 reduction.

Who Saves How Much?

Residential users see tailored relief. For “protected” consumers using up to 100 units, rates fall from Rs6.14 to Rs8.52 per unit—a 32% cut. Those up to 200 units save Rs6.14, landing at Rs11.51 per unit, while 300-unit users get a Rs7.14 drop to Rs34 per unit. Higher users (over 300 units) enjoy a Rs7.24 cut, setting their rate at Rs48.46 per unit. These savings, averaging 17% to 32%, promise lighter April bills.

A detailed breakdown of the savings for domestic and industrial consumers.

Domestic Consumers Savings (April Bill)

UsageOld Rate (Rs)New Rate (Rs)Savings (Rs)% Savings
200 UnitsRs 9,740Rs 7,528Rs 2,21222.7%
300 UnitsRs 14,610Rs 11,292Rs 3,31822.7%
500 UnitsRs 24,350Rs 18,820Rs 5,53022.7%

Industrial Consumers Savings (April Bill)

UsageOld Rate (Rs)New Rate (Rs)Savings (Rs)% Savings
1,000 UnitsRs 58,500Rs 40,510Rs 17,99030.8%
3,000 UnitsRs 175,500Rs 121,530Rs 53,97030.8%

Special Consumer Price Reductions

Consumer TypeOld Price (Rs)New Price (Rs)Price Cut (Rs)% Reduction
Lifeline (Up to 100 Units)Rs 14.66Rs 8.52Rs 6.1442%
Protected (Up to 200 Units)Rs 17.65Rs 11.51Rs 6.1435%
Up to 300 UnitsRs 41.14Rs 34.00Rs 7.1417%
Over 300 UnitsRs 55.70Rs 48.46Rs 7.2413%

The downside of these downward are just the base tariffs. Additional taxes such as GST, Power Duty, PTV fees, and fuel surcharges will still be added, reducing the overall relief. Nonetheless, this adjustment, which is part of broader quarterly and monthly changes, represents a significant effort to alleviate financial pressure and help strengthen Pakistan’s economy.

Sharif’s announcement highlights a comprehensive strategy to reduce energy costs. With industries expecting a 13% decrease in rates and the commercial sector anticipating a 12% reduction, these changes could stimulate business growth and job creation. As 40.3 million users prepare for savings, this 15% cut represents both relief and a strong ambition for a nation eager for economic improvement.
