As many as 59 passengers were killed in a collision between a bus and tanker on Karachi’s Super Highway on Sunday morning.
A coach, with nearly 60 passengers was travelling to Shikarpur from Steel Town in Karachi. It was on the Kathor link road of the Super Highway when it collided with the tanker which was coming from the wrong side just after midnight.
After the collision, the bus burst into flames as the CNG cylinders on the bus exploded leading to the passengers falling unconscious due to suffocation.
As many as half of dozen passengers, who were sitting on the roof of the bus, managed to jump to safety. The bus driver, cleaner and the truck driver also managed to save themselves as well.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon while talking the media outside Chief Minister (CM) House said CM said Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has directed the officials to carry out an inquiry into the incident.
According to the rescue officials, the bodies were shifted to Jinnah hospital for identification purpose and will be handed over to their heirs once the DNA testing is completed.
At least 40 passengers out of the 59, including women and children, were burnt to death. A family of thirteen were also among those who were killed.
Doctor Semi Jamali at Karachi s Jinnah hospital said “We have received more than 57 dead bodies but the death toll may rise as most of them are completely burnt and stuck to each other,”
