A White House shooting left a suspect dead, and one bystander hurt, Saturday evening after a man opened fire near a Secret Service checkpoint.
The US Secret Service said the attack happened at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The site sits near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
CBS, the BBC’s US media partner, identified the suspect as Nasire Best, 21. Law enforcement sources told CBS he was known to the Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department.
According to the Secret Service, Best pulled a gun from his bag shortly before 6 p.m. local time, or 3 a.m. PKT. PKT Sunday. Officers fired back and hit him.
Medical teams took Best to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. No Secret Service officers suffered injuries.
A source familiar with the investigation told CBS that Best tried to enter the White House in July 2025. Later, he spent time in a psychiatric facility.

At the time, President Donald Trump was inside the White House during the shooting. A White House official told CBS that staff briefed him on the incident.
Authorities kept roads around the White House closed overnight as the investigation continued.
