Bill Gates AI limits should include stronger safeguards, possible taxation of AI systems and protections for human jobs, the Microsoft co-founder argued Wednesday. Gates outlined the proposals in a 6,000-word essay titled “The turbulent AI era is here.

The choices we make now are critical.” He said artificial intelligence could deliver major benefits in areas including medicine and agriculture.

However, he warned that the transition could also cause widespread unemployment and create new social and security risks.

Gates said more powerful AI models could increase the danger of cyberattacks, bioterrorism and harmful autonomous behaviour. In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Gates said AI capabilities had advanced faster than he expected.

He argued that governments and technology companies lacked clear criteria for evaluating powerful models and reducing potential harm.

Gates said he would support a credible global plan to slow AI development, although he acknowledged that geopolitical and economic competition made such coordination unlikely.

He also proposed taxing AI systems or robots in a way comparable to payroll taxes paid for human workers. Gates said governments could also reserve some categories of work exclusively for people.

The Microsoft co-founder urged policymakers to act before unemployment rises sharply and public trust weakens.
