WhatsApp is developing AI avatar features that let users create personalized AI avatars and place them in various virtual settings.
The Verge reports that AI avatar features spotted in the WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.24.14.7 generate these avatars using a mix of user-provided images, text prompts, and Meta’s AI Llama model.
According to The Verge’s screenshots, users can visualize themselves in diverse settings, ranging from forests to outer space. The avatars resemble those from popular AI generators like Lensa AI or Snapchat’s “Dreams” selfie feature.
To create these avatars, users must first submit photos, which Meta AI uses as reference images. They can generate avatars by entering commands like “Imagine me” followed by a setting description in Meta AI chat or “@Meta AI imagine me…” in other WhatsApp chats.
The optional feature requires activation in WhatsApp settings. Users can delete their reference images from Meta AI settings anytime, maintaining privacy and control over personal data.
There is no set timeline for the general availability of this AI avatar feature. WhatsApp is gradually rolling out support for its Meta AI chatbot and real-time AI image generation capabilities, mainly in the United States.
The Verge notes that WhatsApp and Meta are navigating the complexities of generative AI tools, and the release of the AI avatar feature may occur gradually. Meta is taking a cautious approach, aiming to ensure the functionality and security of this innovative feature.
As the development continues, WhatsApp users can look forward to a new level of personalization and creativity in their messaging, powered by advanced AI capabilities.
