ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Monday disposed of a petition over the PTI September 27 protest. The court directed authorities to prevent road blockades and the use of state resources for political rallies.

A three-member larger bench was headed by Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar, with Justice Muhammad Azam Khan and Justice Muhammad Asif. The bench heard the petition filed by citizen Waqas Ahmed. Additionally, the bench composition was also confirmed in earlier proceedings.

The court held that political parties and public officeholders cannot occupy roads, highways or other public places in a manner that obstructs citizens’ freedom of movement, according to the decision.

The court directed provincial chief ministers to ensure that government funds, vehicles, machinery and officials are not used for political marches, processions or rallies. Furthermore, the court also ordered that government employees must not be compelled to participate in political protests.

The Islamabad administration and the Ministry of Interior were instructed to protect citizens’ constitutional rights. Meanwhile, provincial chief secretaries and inspectors general of police were directed to implement the court’s directions.

Ahmed had challenged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) mobilisation on grounds that it could disrupt traffic, routine life and business activity in the federal capital. On the other hand, PTI said the September 27 protest aims to secure the release of party founder Imran Khan and campaign for what it calls the supremacy of the Constitution.
