The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee has unveiled a 17-player roster for the upcoming home series against New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Wahab Riaz, part of the PCB’s selection committee, addressed the media to discuss the squad’s composition. He emphasized that standout performances influenced the selection in the Pakistan Super League. However, the decision to include Mohammad Amir in the squad sparked notable criticism from former PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja.
Addressing Ramiz Raja’s critical comments on Amir’s inclusion, Wahab Riaz remarked that Raja’s statements were unduly harsh and questioned the timing and appropriateness of such remarks. Riaz highlighted the importance of respecting diverse opinions, as underscored by religious teachings, suggesting that Raja’s view represents a personal stance rather than a collective judgment.
During his tenure as PCB Chairman, Ramiz Raja strongly opposed the return of players previously implicated in spot-fixing to the national team. He specifically referenced Mohammad Amir’s past involvement in a spot-fixing scandal during a series against England, noting the negative reaction from cricket enthusiasts and others at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Raja expressed a lasting impact from the adverse media coverage following the scandal, maintaining a stance of zero tolerance for individuals who tarnish the nation’s reputation through such misconduct.
Raja strongly believes that players guilty of such actions should not see their careers resurrected under the banner of the national team. Despite potential sympathy for the individuals involved, Raja firmly stated that his principles do not extend forgiveness to those who disgrace the country through their actions.
