Global leaders welcomed the US-Iran peace agreement on Sunday, calling it a diplomatic breakthrough to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that the deal with Iran was complete. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced early Monday local time that an agreement had been reached after Pakistan’s mediation.
The memorandum of understanding is scheduled for formal signing on Friday in Switzerland. The agreement covers an end to the war. Furthermore, it requires a halt to the US blockade of Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the deal as a step toward a peaceful settlement. He also thanked Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and other regional countries for supporting the negotiations.
Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the agreement a significant development for regional peace and stability. He praised Pakistan’s “exceptional mediation efforts” and also acknowledged Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said restraint and constructive engagement would remain essential to prevent further escalation. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the deal marked progress after repeated calls for de-escalation.
President Emmanuel Macron of France called for the swift implementation and urgent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the agreement could help secure a more stable Middle East and a stronger global economy.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said Pakistan and other parties helped create conditions for progress. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan hopes all parties will keep the Strait of Hormuz safe for navigation. Additionally, she said Japan wished that final talks on Iran’s nuclear issue would advance.
New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters called the deal a constructive step toward regional stability. The E4 nations, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy, said they were ready to work with the US and Iran. In addition, they plan to work with the International Atomic Energy Agency on Iran’s nuclear programme.
