Certainly, here’s a detailed account of Hari Budhamagar’s remarkable achievement and its broader context.

Hari Budhamagar, a former British Gurkha soldier from Nepal, made mountaineering history by becoming the first double amputee to scale Mount Everest using prosthetic legs. Personal and regulatory obstacles marked his journey to the summit of the world’s highest mountain.

Budhamagar lost both legs in an explosion while serving in Afghanistan in 2010. From then on, he wore prosthetic limbs but remained determined to continue an active life, dreaming of reaching the top of Mount Everest. However, his aspirations were challenged in 2017 when the Nepalese government implemented a controversial regulation prohibiting climbers with disabilities, including blindness and double amputations, from scaling mountains in Nepal, including Mount Everest. This forced Budhamagar to put his ambitious plan on hold.

The ban sparked significant controversy and was challenged legally. A writ petition was filed against the ban, arguing it was discriminatory. In response, Nepal’s Supreme Court made a landmark decision in 2018, overturning the controversial regulation and ruling favoring climbers with disabilities. This decision effectively cleared the way for Budhamagar’s expedition to Everest.

Despite the physical and mental challenges of mountaineering, especially as a double amputee, Budhamagar pressed on. His perseverance and determination culminated in his successful ascent of Everest, showcasing humanity’s incredible resilience and indomitable spirit.

Meanwhile, Nepal continues to be a sought-after destination for mountaineers worldwide. The country has eight of the world’s ten highest peaks, including Mount Everest. Nepal issued 466 permits during this climbing season, underscoring the enduring fascination with and attraction to the majestic Himalayan peaks.

Hari Budhamagar’s incredible feat is a potent reminder that the human spirit knows no bounds. His journey and achievement will continue to inspire countless individuals, encouraging them to overcome obstacles and achieve victories.
