Nuuk, Greenland: Trump’s Greenland envoy, Jeff Landry, began his first visit to the Arctic territory, but local leaders again said Greenland is not for sale.
Landry, who also serves as the governor of Louisiana, said he came to build relationships, listen and learn. President Donald Trump appointed him to the envoy role in December 2025.
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen met Landry and US Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery on Monday. Nielsen said Greenlanders have the right to self-determination.
Nielsen said the meeting had a good tone. However, he said there would be no parallel talks while US, Danish and Greenlandic officials continue higher-level discussions.
Landry travelled to Nuuk for a business summit and the opening of a new US consulate building. The trip took place without an official invitation.
An American doctor also travelled with the delegation to assess medical needs. Greenland’s Health Minister Anna Wangenheim called that move “deeply problematic.”
The visit follows a diplomatic crisis caused by Trump’s earlier threat to seize Greenland by force. A working group later began talks to ease the dispute.
Greenland’s Foreign Minister Mute Egede said the US position on acquiring the territory has not changed. Landry told reporters they would need to ask Trump about that question.
The Trump Greenland envoy mission has met resistance from some local figures. Former politician Maliina Abelsen declined a meeting, citing the timing as inappropriate.
