The Divine app has opened to the public, reviving Vine-style six-second looping videos while banning AI-generated content and restoring more than 2.5 million archived Vines.

Founder and former Twitter employee Evan Henshaw-Plath told the BBC he created the service because he believed social media needed “a reset”.

Divine requires users to record videos inside the app rather than upload them from elsewhere. It also uses ProofMode, a verification tool that can record details about when media was created and whether a file was altered.

Meanwhile, users can flag suspected AI content. Divine also plans to use automated tools and human review to identify material created with artificial intelligence.

The app is built on Nostr, a decentralised network that can allow users to move accounts and content between compatible services.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey backs the project. Twitter bought Vine in 2012 before shutting down the short-form video service in 2017.

Henshaw-Plath said he reconstructed archived Vine material after discovering that the Internet Archive had preserved a copy of the platform’s data.

Interest proved stronger than he expected. He said about 10,000 people installed Divine within its first few hours, temporarily overwhelming its servers.

Social media analyst Matt Navarra said Divine must now show it can reduce some of the engagement mechanics associated with modern platforms without losing their appeal.
