US President Donald Trump labelled the escalating India-Pakistan tensions a “shame” after India’s missile attacks on Pakistan, following the April 22 Pahalgam incident. As Pakistan retaliates, Trump and US officials urge de-escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

On May 7, 2025, President Donald Trump addressed India’s missile strikes on Pakistan, calling the rising tensions a “shame” during a White House briefing, as reported by Reuters. “I just hope it ends very quickly,” he said, noting the long history of conflict between the nations.

The strikes, targeting civilian areas in Punjab and Azad Kashmir, followed India’s unproven claim of Pakistan’s role in the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26, mostly tourists, per Al Jazeera. Pakistan, denying involvement, shot down five Indian jets and destroyed a brigade headquarters in retaliation, per Dawn.

Trump says it’s a “shame” that India and Pakistan are attacking each other and hopes the conflict is over “quickly.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio monitors the situation and posted on X about engaging both nations for a “peaceful resolution.” India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval briefed Rubio on the strikes, per the Indian embassy in Washington, while the US State Department emphasised ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Context and US Stance

The Pahalgam attack prompted India to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and impose trade bans, matched by Pakistan’s airspace closures and retaliatory strikes, escalating a volatile crisis, as noted by Geo News. Trump, who offered India support post-attack without directly blaming Pakistan, previously said on April 25 that the nations would “figure it out,” per Bloomberg. Analysts suggest the US, preoccupied with Ukraine and Gaza conflicts, may initially leave de-escalation to India and Pakistan, though Rubio’s recent calls signal active engagement.
