Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 at BC Place, Vancouver, reaching the last 16 after goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye.
Embolo put Switzerland ahead in the 10th minute after 20-year-old Johan Manzambi broke down the left and squared the ball across the goal.
Ndoye doubled the lead early in the second half after a weak Rafik Belghali clearance fell to him inside the area.
The win gave Switzerland its first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1938. Switzerland will face Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver next week.
Coach Murat Yakin set Switzerland up to absorb Algeria’s pressure and counter quickly against Vladimir Petković, his predecessor as Swiss coach.
Embolo said Switzerland had to stay clinical and “play with great maturity.”
Algeria’s best first-half chance came when Ibrahim Maza dragged a stoppage-time shot wide of the near post. Riyad Mahrez missed a central chance after Ndoye’s goal, firing straight at a defender.

Granit Xhaka then helped Switzerland control their defensive shape as Algeria struggled to break through. Substitute Fabian Rieder missed a late chance, but Switzerland had already done enough.
Mahrez said after the match that it was his last appearance for Algeria.
