In a UK High Court defamation trial, Shayan Ali’s lawyer revealed his client’s mental health struggles. Ali, a UK-based activist linked to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, is represented by Mahtab Anwar Aziz from Central Law Chambers.
The lawsuit against Ali and Adil Farooq Raja originated from Mariam Aurangzeb of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Brigadier (retired) Rashid Naseer. They accused Ali and Raja of making severe allegations against Pakistan’s military.
In court, Aziz highlighted Ali’s vulnerability due to his mental health issues. He described the legal action as a tactic to silence criticism by overwhelming the defendants financially.
Aziz criticized the opposing counsel for prolonging the case, which he said exacerbated Ali’s stress and financial burden. He urged for an early settlement to mitigate damage to his client.
Aziz argued that Ali, a student supported by his family, was defending his free speech rights. He protested against PML-N in London, claiming economic crimes by Aurangzeb.
Aziz argued for dismissing the lawsuit, asserting it was baseless and aimed at curbing free speech. However, the judge decided to continue with the legal proceedings.
Additionally, Aziz requested the lawsuit be dismissed or delayed for several months to reduce pressure on Ali.
