Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia will visit Pakistan this month to finalize trade agreements. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar indicated the exact dates are pending despite reports suggesting a mid-May arrival.
Dar mentioned that the Crown Prince had previously accepted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation. This visit follows MBS’s commitment to invest $5 billion in Pakistan, initiating government and subsequent business talks. A recent visit from Saudi and Pakistani business leaders in Islamabad proved fruitful, with significant projects discussed.
Regarding the Pak-Iran gas pipeline, Dar stated Pakistan would base its decision on national interest, resisting external influences. This stance was affirmed during the Iranian president’s recent visit, emphasising energy cooperation despite U.S. sanctions.
Additionally, Dar plans a strategic dialogue in Beijing with his counterpart Wang Yi from May 13-15, marking his first visit under the new government. In contrast, Dar defended his previous decision not to import wheat due to unsatisfactory justifications.
Lastly, Dar confirmed facilitating a meeting between US envoy Donald Blome and Opposition Leader Omar Ayub, emphasizing the US’s initiative. This meeting, part of broader US diplomatic efforts in Pakistan, countered accusations against the PTI of engaging with foreign powers under coercion.
