Sabalenka and Swiatek Set for Their Semis Showdown at Australian Open

Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are the favourites to win their respective semi-finals at the Australian Open, potentially setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown.

On Thursday night at Rod Laver Arena, the Australian Open semifinals will mesmerize fans at Melbourne Park, showcasing the women’s competition right before Friday’s men’s finals.

World number one and reigning champion Sabalenka will face Spain’s 11th seed, Paula Badosa, at 7:30 pm (0830 GMT). If Sabalenka emerges victorious, she will become the first woman since Martina Hingis in 1999 to secure three consecutive Australian Open titles, entering an elite circle alongside legends such as Margaret Court and Steffi Graf.

“I’m really happy that I put myself in this situation where I have the opportunity to become one of them,” remarked the 26-year-old Belarusian. “To be next to those names, wow, that’s just a dream.”

Badosa, who recently stunned world number three Coco Gauff and reached her first Grand Slam semi-final at 27, has overcome significant challenges, including a chronic back condition that nearly ended her career last year. A year ago, I didn’t know if I had to retire from this sport,” She shared. Now, she is on the brink of returning to the top 10 after dramatically dropping rankings.

Following Sabalenka’s match, five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek will take on Madison Keys. Swiatek has been dominant, the world number two, dropping only 14 games across five matches. She exudes calm and confidence as she eyes her first Australian Open title and aims to reclaim the world number one spot from Sabalenka, which she could achieve if Sabalenka does not reach the final.

Keys, the American 19th seed, finds herself in the Melbourne semi-finals for the third time, buoyed by a 10-match win streak that includes the recent Adelaide title. Reflecting on her evolution since her first semi-final appearance a decade ago, Keys said, “I’m probably a little bit less fearless now, but to be here 10 years later, I’m really proud of myself.”
