Russian drones near Romania put NATO aircraft on alert after British RAF Eurofighter Typhoon jets were scrambled during a Russian attack close to Ukraine’s border with Romania early Saturday. Romania’s Ministry of Defence detected drone activity near its territory as Russian strikes hit Ukrainian areas around the Danube border region.
RAF Typhoons assigned to NATO air policing were launched after Romania detected drones near its border with Ukraine. Romanian authorities issued local RO-ALERT warnings, Poland activated allied aviation, and NATO-linked responses remained defensive as Russia continued missile and drone attacks across Ukraine.
Romanian authorities said the National Military Command Centre alerted emergency officials, leading to RO-ALERT warnings in Grindu and Isaccea, both in Tulcea County. The Romanian statement said the RAF aircraft established radar contact with a target near Reni, Ukraine, around 1.5 kilometres from the area.
The pilots were authorised to engage the drones, while ground radars tracked multiple targets. Explosions were reported near Reni, a Ukrainian port city close to the Romanian border.
Residents in Galați later reported the fall of an object in the Bariera Traian area through Romania’s 112 emergency service. The report added to concerns over debris risks near NATO territory, even as the available information did not confirm a direct attack on alliance soil.
Poland Also Puts Air Defences on Alert
Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command also said Polish and allied aviation were activated because of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Fighter aircraft and an early warning aircraft were deployed, while ground-based air defence and radar systems were placed on heightened readiness.
The Polish command described the move as preventive. It said the measures were intended to secure airspace in areas bordering Ukrainian regions under attack, a response that has become more common during large-scale Russian drone and missile strikes.

The latest attack injured at least 14 people, according to the supplied report. Damage was reported in Dnipro, including a residential building, an industrial site, homes, vehicles and other property.
These parallel responses in Romania and Poland show how Russia’s attacks on Ukraine can quickly trigger security procedures inside NATO countries, even when the strikes are not aimed directly at alliance territory.
The RAF deployment took place under NATO air policing arrangements in Romania, where allied aircraft help monitor and protect alliance airspace. The mission is designed for quick reaction, radar identification and deterrence, not offensive action inside Ukraine.
