Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg published a 6,500-word open letter titled “The Future is for Everyone,” announcing plans to publicly share the code and design of the company’s artificial intelligence tools.

The open-source strategy will allow external developers to view, modify, and deploy Meta’s AI technology without license restrictions.

In the document, Zuckerberg rejected warnings from economists about automation, stating he anticipates an abundance of future jobs despite Meta cutting 8,000 positions, 10% of its workforce, during recent AI-focused corporate restructurings.

The push toward open-source models occurs as Western tech firms compete against Chinese open-weight AI models, including Qwen, DeepSeek, and GLM.

Economics researcher Noah Smith warned that open-sourcing advanced software carries risks if highly capable models acquire autonomous exploitation capabilities.

Tulane University business professor Rob Lalka stated that corporate executives use long-form manifestos to counter public backlash regarding the environmental and labour impacts of AI development.
