Robert Downey Jr. said “Avengers: Doomsday” will “more than suffice,” as he addressed fan expectations around Marvel Studios’ next major crossover film.
The actor spoke to CBR alongside co-director Joe Russo and said the film’s structure, characters and forward plan answer how Marvel can follow “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
Downey did not reveal plot details. However, he said the creative team had worked “long and hard” on what he described as the film’s answer to post-“Endgame” expectations.
Russo described “Avengers: Doomsday” as “the most emotionally complex” Marvel film and said it was, in many ways, “the most mature.” He also said the film would include “a lot of surprises.”
Downey returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe not as Tony Stark but as Doctor Doom. His original run as Iron Man ended with Stark’s death in “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

Marvel’s post-“Endgame” record has been mixed. “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” performed strongly, while “The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” fell short.
“Avengers: Doomsday” will also set up “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The film opens in cinemas on December 18 from Disney and Marvel Studios.
