Lahore, Punjab: A resolution seeking a Punjab under-16 social media ban and an effective age-verification system was tabled in the Punjab Assembly.
Member of the Provincial Assembly Sarah Ahmed, who chairs the Punjab Child Protection and Welfare Bureau, presented the resolution.
The resolution called for legislation to protect children from cyberbullying, online exploitation and exposure to inappropriate digital content.
It urged the federal government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to establish an effective regulatory and monitoring framework for underage social media users.
The proposed system would require platforms and authorities to verify users’ ages before allowing children access to social media services.
The resolution cited measures introduced in Australia, France, China and some U.S. states as examples of policies designed to strengthen children’s online safety.

Sarah Ahmed said every child had a right to a safe digital environment and called for timely legislation to protect that right.
The resolution has been tabled for consideration and does not, in itself, impose a ban or create a new legal restriction.
