MOSCOW, Russia: A Moscow restaurant bombing killed three people and wounded at least 21 on August 1 after an improvised explosive device detonated near a central city cafe.
An unidentified woman tried to carry the device into the venue at Kudrinskaya Square, Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee said. A security guard stopped her before the explosion.
The woman, the guard and a restaurant customer died in the blast, according to an Associated Press report.
The explosion occurred at about 8:10 pm Moscow time. The Russian Interior Ministry initially reported 15 injuries before authorities raised the figure to 21.

Russian newspaper Kommersant identified the venue as the Balzi Rossi restaurant. Citing unnamed sources, it said the restaurant’s terrace was hosting a private function.
The newspaper also reported that investigators opened a terrorism case. However, authorities had not publicly identified a motive or intended target.
Russian officials did not confirm reports that Russian Aerospace Forces Commander-in-Chief Alexander Chaiko attended the event.
