KYIV, Ukraine: A Kyiv missile attack killed at least nine people and injured more than 30, including four children, in the Eastern European country’s capital early on August 1, city officials said.

Air-raid sirens sounded, immediately before explosions began across the city. Russia launched several waves of ballistic missiles and drones.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 17 people remained hospitalised. The official city update raised the casualty count from 28 injured to 29.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched 35 missiles, including 27 ballistic weapons, and 185 drones nationwide.

Ukraine intercepted only one ballistic missile because no Patriot interceptors were available for the attack, according to a Reuters report.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service showed the consequences of a massive overnight Russian strike on Kyiv on Aug. 1.

The attack left at least 9 dead and 30 injured, damaging 18 residential buildings across 7 districts.

Ukrainian officials reported damage in seven Kyiv districts. Eighteen residential buildings, a school, the Lithuanian Embassy and infrastructure facilities sustained damage, Zelenskyy said.

Two strikes hit the Kyivmedspetstrans municipal medical transport facility. Five ambulances burned completely, while 20 vehicles serving city healthcare facilities suffered extensive damage. Officials reported no casualties at the site.

Emergency workers rescued 105 people from damaged and burning structures. Search and recovery operations continued after the authorities reported people trapped beneath rubble.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces targeted Ukrainian military-industrial and logistics infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said residential buildings and other civilian sites were among the locations struck.
