KYIV, Ukraine: Kyiv missile strikes killed at least 13 people overnight as Russia launched a large drone and missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, officials said.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said more than 30 people were injured and 34 people had been rescued.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said children were among a significant number of casualties.

Several neighbourhoods were evacuated after strikes hit buildings across the city. Emergency crews reported fires, damaged residential buildings and destruction at an ambulance station.

Rescue operations continued at several impact sites, including a high-rise apartment building and homes in south-east Kyiv.

Ukraine’s U.S. ambassador, Olha Stefanishyna, said residents were forced to spend the night in shelters.

The attack came hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia was preparing a massive strike.
