Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has recently distanced itself from Awami Muslim League leader and ex-interior minister Sheikh Rashid and announced candidates against Sheikh Rashid and other candidates of Awami Muslim League.
The development surfaced following PTI’s announcement regarding allocating party tickets for National Assembly seats. The announcement on Friday notably left several constituencies unassigned, with a pronounced gap in Central Punjab.
In a strategic manoeuvre, PTI is fielding its candidates in constituencies where Sheikh Rasheed, formerly a party ally, competes, particularly evident in NA-56, where Shahryar Riaz has been chosen to contest against the experienced Rashid. In a notable twist to the political scenario, PTI has endorsed Samabia Tahir for NA-57, reflecting the party’s commitment to presenting a diverse roster for the upcoming elections.
In a recent Twitter video, Sheikh Rashid expressed his disappointment with the PTI leadership, stating that despite his dedication and sacrifices for Imran Khan and the party over the past one and a half-years, he did not expect such a turn of events. However, he affirmed his continued friendship with Imran Khan.
The political landscape intensified as Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, Sheikh Rashid’s nephew, did not receive a PTI ticket. Moreover, the constituency of NA-117 in Lahore, previously held by Aleem Khan, remains without a PTI nominee.
Unresolved Candidacies and Political Suspense
The PTI has yet to reveal its candidates for several pivotal constituencies. This includes NA-132 in Kasur, where PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif is expected to compete. The fate of four Lahore constituencies – NA-117, NA-119, NA-120, and NA-125 – is still in the air, adding to the prevailing political uncertainty. Decisions are also pending for NA-74 Sialkot, NA-82 Sargodha, and NA-94.
In an unexpected turn, PTI leader Shafqat Mahmood announced his decision to withdraw from the electoral race. In a statement released on social media, Mahmood communicated his choice to withdraw his nomination papers and not to contest from any constituency.
