French police detained 235 people in Paris after PSG Champions League celebrations turned violent following the club’s final victory on Saturday, authorities said.
The French Interior Ministry said 326 people were detained nationwide. Officials deployed 22,000 police officers across France, including 8,000 in Paris, to prevent unrest around the match.
Paris Police Headquarters said six vehicles and two businesses suffered damage. One police officer also sustained injuries during the disturbances.
About 20,000 supporters gathered on the Champs-Élysées after Paris Saint-Germain’s penalty shoot-out victory in Budapest. Police halted some tram lines, closed several metro stations and restricted bus traffic to limit disorder.
An AFP photographer said some supporters stormed the Paris ring road, known as the périphérique, and briefly blocked traffic while setting off flares. Police said officers seized around 100 fireworks and two dozen flares.
Clashes also broke out near PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where tens of thousands watched the match. Police said 4,000 to 5,000 people remained outside, and some threw projectiles at officers.
A police spokesperson said about 150 people tried to enter through one stadium gate before officers pushed them back. Police also cleared a barricade made with rental bikes near the stadium.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said authorities had put a “very robust, very solid system” in place to curb violence. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen criticised the unrest on X and said France was unusual in seeing riots after a football victory.
