British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faced backlash from the public and road safety campaigners after appearing in a video without wearing a seatbelt while recording content for social media. In the video, Sunak was seen addressing the camera from the back of a car, discussing the government’s funding plans to “level up” communities nationwide. However, his failure to buckle up during the ride caught viewers’ attention, who expressed concern over his lack of regard for road safety.

Following the incident, a spokesperson for Downing Street stated on behalf of Sunak, apologizing for his mistake and acknowledging that it was an “instantaneous lapse in judgment.” The spokesperson emphasized that the Prime Minister fully recognized his error and had taken responsibility for it.

Under British law, wearing a seatbelt is mandatory for all passengers in a moving vehicle, with few exceptions, such as emergency services, reversing vehicles, or taxis. Failure to comply with the law can result in a fine of up to £500.

The incident sparked further debate on the importance of road safety and the need for public figures to set a good example. Some critics argued that Sunak’s actions were particularly concerning given his position as the country’s top financial official, responsible for managing the government’s budget and overseeing economic policy.

Despite the controversy, Sunak has continued to receive support from his colleagues and followers on social media. Many praise his efforts to support local communities and spur economic growth in the country. However, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and responsibility while driving or riding in a vehicle, especially for those in positions of power and influence.
