Islamabad: Senior leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Aitzaz Ahsan on Friday raised questions over Rangers report which revealed that some political parties and their influential figures were involved in collecting extortion of billions of rupees in Karachi.

The shocking report of Rangers revealed that more than Rs.230 billion are being generated annually from Karachiites through extortion and other illegal means, adding that part of the huge amount was also being used for terror-funding, Lyari gang war and criminal activities across the city.

“In Karachi, none other than the top political leaders are godfathering extortionists, land–grabbers, diesel smugglers, gangsters, militants, water-tanker mafia, etc.,” the provincial head of the paramilitary troops said in a briefing given to the Apex Committee, formed under Pakistan’s anti-terror National Action Plan (NAP).

Speaking to media persons outside Parliament House in Islamabad, Aitzaz Ahsan raised questions over the report, saying that how the figure of Rs.230 billion extortion was estimated.

“We are ready to take action if solid evidences are provided,” he said, adding that PPP has nothing to do with Fitra or collection of hides of sacrificial animals for charity.

Meanwhile, senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) urged the federal government to take action over the report, saying that many politicians in Karachi were involved in patronizing extortionists.
