A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Mindanao on Monday, triggering tsunami warnings across coastal areas in the Philippines and Indonesia.
Officials reported one death and no major damage so far. The US Tsunami Warning System also issued an alert, while residents in coastal areas were told to move to higher ground.
DZBB radio in General Santos, about 15km from the epicentre, reported falling furniture and damage to televisions and appliances. Residents left their homes as aftershocks continued.
The General Santos disaster office said authorities were assessing reports of damage and injuries. In Sarangani province, power and telecommunications were down, and school classes were suspended.
Local disaster chief Rene Punzalan said damage checks were underway near the epicentre. He said there were no immediate reports of collapsed buildings.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr of the Philippines said the national government was coordinating a rapid disaster response. “We will not leave Mindanao behind,” Marcos said in a statement.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of possible damage and tsunami waves above one metre that could continue for several hours. Indonesia’s geophysics agency BKMG said waves of 0.19 metres had been detected so far.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences said the quake struck at a depth of 10km. It was earlier reported as 8.2 before being revised to 7.8.
Benjie Ancheta, police chief of Alabel town in Sarangani, said the quake cracked the police building during a flag-raising ceremony. “This is the strongest earthquake we’ve experienced,” he told Reuters by phone.

Arlene Hollero, disaster chief of Maasim town in Sarangani, said coastal evacuations were underway. She said water receded shortly after the quake, a bridge developed cracks, and a shrine with a large cross collapsed.
