Federal Minister for Communications, Privatisation, and Board of Investment Abdul Aleem Khan announced Pakistan’s goal to convert 30% of its vehicles to electric by 2030 under the government’s approved Electric Vehicle (EV) policy.

The ambitious target underscores Pakistan’s commitment to addressing climate change and fostering sustainable transportation.

The minister highlighted ongoing initiatives to support the widespread adoption of EVs, including infrastructure development, installation of charging stations, and public awareness campaigns about the benefits of electric mobility.

Speaking at the “Transport and Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond” session during COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Aleem Khan led Pakistan’s delegation. The event featured participation from ministers and delegates representing countries such as Turkiye, Georgia, Bulgaria, Netherlands, and Azerbaijan, as well as organizations like the UN, European Commission, and ITF.

During the Ministerial Roundtable, Khan emphasized the urgency of adopting green urban transport solutions and renewable energy projects to tackle population pressures and worsening air quality. He reiterated Pakistan’s progress in deploying EV charging infrastructure to ensure a smooth transition to electric mobility.

Khan also shared updates on Karachi’s new biomethane hybrid bus fleet, which will reduce fuel costs by 100%, and the potential for the National Green Transport Project to explore Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models for long-term sustainability.

The minister called for micro-level interventions in the transport sector to combat climate change and smog, significantly impacting public health and urban living standards.

At the “Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond” session, Aleem Khan discussed green technology, smog reduction, and transport sector digitalization. He noted the importance of such forums for exchanging knowledge and developing actionable, long-term policies.

Khan thanked Azerbaijan’s Minister of Transport Rashid Nabiov and Minister of Economy Mikael Jabarov for their productive discussions and support. He underscored the need for international collaboration to achieve meaningful progress in sustainable transport initiatives.
