NEW YORK: Pakistan’s peace role in regional mediation drew praise from UN Secretary-General António Guterres during a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday.
The meeting took place at United Nations Headquarters on the sidelines of the fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit.
Guterres and Naqvi discussed regional developments, international affairs and Pakistan’s mediation efforts in West Asia.
PTV News said the discussion also covered Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran.
The UN chief appreciated Pakistan’s efforts for peace and thanked Islamabad for its long-term support to UN peacekeeping missions.
Naqvi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir had played a responsible role in promoting regional peace and stability.
He said realistic mandates and required resources were essential for the success of peacekeeping missions.
Naqvi also addressed the UN Chiefs of Police Summit and called for stronger cooperation against transnational security threats.
He cited terrorism, organised crime, cybercrime, drug trafficking, human smuggling and money laundering as shared global challenges.

On the sidelines of the summit, Naqvi also met Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Alexandrovich Kolokoltsev.
Pakistan and Russia discussed cooperation in counterterrorism, counter-narcotics, cybercrime and law-enforcement training, the interior ministry said.
