Nikon, traditionally known for its cameras, has entered a new field. They have developed a unique system that combines imaging and AI technology. This system is designed to assist farmers by alerting them when a cow is close to giving birth.
Streamlining Farm Operations with Technology
This innovation aims to improve the efficiency of monitoring pregnant cows, especially during the hectic birthing seasons. Priced at 900,000 yen annually for farms with around 100 cows, the system includes a security-style camera integrated with AI. It connects to a smartphone app, sending alerts when a calf is imminent. This allows farmers to act promptly when needed.
In the fall of 2021, Nikon began training the AI. They conducted trials on four farms in southwestern Japan in February 2023. The AI system can recognize signs in pregnant cows about five hours before labour. These signs include increased movement and the emergence of the calf’s amniotic sac.
Kazuhiro Hirano from Nikon shared the company’s plans to enhance the system further. They aim to detect when a female cow is in heat and identify other behavioural patterns.
Keita Higuchi, a livestock owner who tested the system, attested to its effectiveness. Higuchi noted that the system greatly assisted in managing the delivery of about 60 calves per year. It reduced the need for constant checks on the cows before delivery.
This venture into agricultural technology demonstrates Nikon’s ability to apply its AI and imaging expertise beyond consumer cameras.
