Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti named Neymar in his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but said the forward must earn his place in the starting lineup.
Ancelotti announced the squad in Rio de Janeiro on Monday and said Neymar had improved his fitness after an injury-hit spell, according to Reuters and The Guardian. The 34-year-old Santos FC forward has not played for Brazil since October 2023.
“He will play if he deserves to play,” Ancelotti said. He added that Neymar would be subject to the same obligations as the other 25 players.

Ancelotti said Neymar could help Brazil in a more central attacking role after regaining rhythm with Santos FC. He also cited the forward’s dressing-room influence and experience.
Neymar’s selection gives him a chance to play in a fourth World Cup. Reuters described him as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer and said his return follows a long absence during the qualifying cycle.
Brazil’s attacking options also include Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Gabriel Martinelli, Luiz Henrique, Igor Thiago, Endrick, Matheus Cunha and Rayan, according to the squad details.
Brazil will open Group C against Morocco on June 13 in New Jersey. The five-time champions then face Haiti on June 19 in Philadelphia and Scotland on June 24 in Miami.
