ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said the Asim Munir Iran visit on August 24 was part of Islamabad’s mediation efforts and rejected reports that he travelled to Tehran as US President Donald Trump’s envoy.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told a weekly briefing Thursday that reports portraying the visit in that context were “misleading and factually incorrect.”

Andrabi said Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, visited Tehran as part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to help end the US-Iran conflict and support renewed efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the spokesperson, discussions focused on regional de-escalation, breaking the military stalemate and exploring a negotiated settlement to restore stability.

He said Pakistan remained engaged with regional partners to address the crisis in the Middle East and the Gulf, including the standoff between Washington and Tehran.

Andrabi described Islamabad’s role as an attempt to bridge differences between the United States and Iran. He added that Iranian leaders had expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts toward de-escalation and regional peace.
