ISLAMABAD: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir concluded a day-long Iran visit after talks in Tehran on de-escalating the US-Iran conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reaching a negotiated settlement.

The Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces travelled with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi as part of Pakistan’s effort to break the diplomatic stalemate, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Tuesday.

Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Supreme Leader’s representative on the Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.

ISPR said the discussions focused on preventing further escalation, securing an expedited end to hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy shipments. Iranian leaders also expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue and de-escalation.

Tehran separately told Islamabad that Washington should take the first steps towards de-escalation by meeting commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. The Iranian message came as Pakistan sought to revive the diplomatic process established under the June agreement.

Pakistan helped broker the Islamabad MoU between Iran and the United States on June 18, 2026. The agreement initially provided for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and further negotiations, but subsequent talks stalled after fighting resumed.

No new ceasefire or final settlement was announced following Munir’s latest Tehran meetings.
