Following the full drama, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has decided to join the coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), aiming to navigate the country through its current challenges. Mustafa Kamal, the party’s deputy convener, announced this strategic decision on Sunday.
The February 8 general election concluded without a clear majority for any party, prompting key political entities to engage in discussions to formulate a coalition government. A pivotal development occurred last week when PML-N and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) disclosed an agreement on a power-sharing arrangement for governance.
This arrangement positions PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif for the prime ministerial role, with PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari continuing as president for the next five years.
Kamal expressed that joining the PML-N-led coalition was not the preferred route but deemed necessary to address the nation’s predicament. He confirmed ongoing negotiations with PML-N are progressing positively, emphasizing MQM-P’s commitment to its constituents.
He refuted any claims of negotiation impasses with PML-N regarding the power-sharing arrangement.
Detailing the coalition’s formation stages, Kamal mentioned that the initial phase involves the swearing-in of elected lawmakers, followed by ministry allocations. While he refrained from specifying ministry demands, he confirmed MQM-P’s intention to participate in the government and assume ministerial roles actively.
MQM-P plans to propose a constitutional amendment draft, seeking PML-N’s support, illustrating their readiness to face the governance challenge.
Earlier discussions between PML-N’s prime ministerial candidate, Shehbaz, and MQM-P representatives underscored a mutual commitment to national interests and collaborative governance to address public concerns. Shehbaz emphasized the importance of vote sanctity and the collective effort to stabilize the national economy.
The MQM-P lauded Shehbaz’s unifying leadership, crediting him with maintaining coalition harmony. They expressed confidence in overcoming Pakistan’s difficulties under Shehbaz’s guidance, highlighting his potential to foster national unity and economic stability.
