BIRMINGHAM, England: Pakistan were 133 all out before debutant Razaullah struck twice, but England recovered to reach 156-4 and lead by 23 runs after day one of the third Test at Edgbaston.

Josh Tongue led England’s attack with 4-42, while Ollie Robinson took 3-15 and Jofra Archer claimed 3-25 as Pakistan were dismissed in 33.5 overs. Saud Shakeel top-scored with 43.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam made seven from 18 balls before Tongue bowled him with the total at 48-5. Pakistan have now failed to reach 200 in each of their five completed innings in the three-Test series.

Razaullah then gave Pakistan an early response with the ball. The 21-year-old fast bowler trapped England captain Joe Root lbw for eight for his maiden Test wicket and later bowled opener Emilio Gay for 60.

England had slipped to 39-3 before Gay, and Harry Brook added 104 runs for the fourth wicket. Brook finished unbeaten on 52 as the hosts closed at 156-4.

Razaullah ended the day with figures of 2-42 from nine overs. He entered the Test with only seven first-class appearances and was one of three Pakistan players handed Test debuts at Edgbaston.

The match followed major mid-series changes by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which sent seven players home after Pakistan lost the opening two Tests. Babar said before the match that the decision was “news to me” and that he learned of the changes afterwards.

England led the three-match series 2-0, making the Edgbaston Test Pakistan’s final opportunity to avoid a series whitewash.
