Mourinho’s Real Madrid return plans were confirmed by Florentino Pérez’s campaign on Wednesday, with José Mourinho set to coach the club again if Pérez wins Sunday’s presidential election.
Pérez’s campaign released a short video showing Mourinho wearing a Real Madrid shirt and saying “Yes.” The announcement came as rival candidate Enrique Riquelme appeared on the Spanish TV programme “El Hormiguero.”
The move would bring Mourinho back to Real Madrid more than a decade after his first spell from 2010 to 2013. During that period, he won three trophies, including the 2011-12 La Liga title known as the “League of Records.”
That Madrid side broke Spanish league records for points and goals while competing against Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, led by Lionel Messi. However, Mourinho did not win the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid and reached three semifinals.
The 2012 Champions League exit to Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabéu remains one of the key moments of his first spell. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Sergio Ramos missed penalties in the shootout.
