In a landmark moment in Pakistan’s electoral history, Dr. Saveera Parkash, a member of the Hindu community, is set to stand in the upcoming general elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Buner district as a candidate for the Pakistan Peoples Party, marks the first Hindu woman to contest in such elections, representing a groundbreaking moment in the nation’s political narrative.
Dr. Saveera Parkash successfully cleared the scrutiny of her documents and will contest elections in the PK-25 constituency of the KP Assembly.
Dr. Parkash’s candidacy also extends to the national and provincial assemblies reserved seats. This marks a significant moment in the region’s political landscape, offering a fresh perspective on diversity and representation.
Dr. Parkash faces a formidable challenge against established political figures like Awami National Party (ANP) leader Sardar Hussain Babak, former minister Riaz Khan, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) leader Mufti Fazal Ghafoor. The election, scheduled for February 8, 2024, promises to be a keenly watched contest.
Trailblazing Candidates Breaking Barriers
A recent MBBS graduate from Abbottabad International Medical College, Dr. Parkash serves as the general secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) women’s wing in Buner. Her father, Dr. Om Parkash, a recently retired active party member of 35 years, lends an experienced background to her campaign.
Dr. Parkash expressed her enthusiasm and surprise at the overwhelmingly positive response from the local community, including leaders and supporters of religious parties.
In a similarly groundbreaking move, Sobia Khan, a transgender person from KP, has filed nomination papers to contest for the provincial assembly seat from constituency PK-81. Running as an independent candidate, Sobia is committed to advocating for the rights of the transgender community, women, and children.
Dr. Parkash’s election strategy involves extensive door-to-door outreach, aiming to engage support from all community members. Sobia, holding a Bachelor’s degree and the distinction of being the first transgender radio jockey in the province, is determined to challenge societal perceptions and contribute positively to society’s welfare.
