Lahore, Punjab: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz issued a warning Friday that anyone who harasses, blackmails or threatens a woman will not be pardoned.
Maryam spoke for the first time on the controversy involving Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Saqib Chadhar and actor Momina Iqbal. She said the matter would be handled strictly on merit. In addition, it would be handled in accordance with the law.
The chief minister said no one stands above the law, regardless of office or political affiliation. She added that state institutions would act independently and in accordance with the Constitution.
Maryam warned that authorities would take strict action against anyone who threatens to leak a woman’s private content or puts undue pressure on her. She said the government would not tolerate misuse of political power. Furthermore, it would not tolerate misuse of influence.
Chadhar denied wrongdoing and accused Iqbal of “playing the women card.” He claimed that he had no contact with her for the past eight months. He also said he had records to support his position.
The PML-N lawmaker also claimed that Iqbal’s fiancé had threatened him after viewing a video. He said he had submitted an application at a police station over the alleged threats.
Chadhar further claimed that Iqbal’s mother had contacted him and apologised. He challenged the actor to present evidence of any alleged calls or communication
