LAHORE, Punjab: Maryam Nawaz’s speaker meeting was held to discuss recent controversies in the Punjab Assembly and clear misunderstandings, official sources said.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz held a one-on-one meeting with Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan.
The meeting followed a debate over the Speaker’s Office’s role in scrutiny of police conduct and a disputed bill.
The Punjab Assembly’s Committee on Law Reforms and Delegated Legislation had reviewed police performance, particularly the Crime Control Department.
Lawmakers, human rights groups and civil society had raised concerns over alleged police misconduct and extrajudicial killings. The committee had summoned senior police officers, including the Sheikhupura regional police officer and the Kasur district police officer.

The speaker told the chief minister that the summons aimed to protect the dignity and constitutional sanctity of his office. The meeting also covered the Punjab Control of Habitual Offenders and Anti-Social Behaviour Bill, 2026.
The speaker had privately criticised the bill as echoing colonial-era laws, while opposition parties, civil society and ruling-party lawmakers also raised objections.
Maryam Nawaz later ordered a comprehensive review and redrafting of the bill. An official handout said the chief minister and speaker discussed mutual interest, the province’s political situation and the ongoing budget session.
