Nirvana fans have a surprise treat: Kurt Cobain’s white Fender Stratocaster, which was famously smashed during the band’s European tour in 1992, will go up for auction this Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
Bidding begins at 9:00 a.m. US time, with a minimum price of $30,000, on the GottaHaveRockAndRoll platform. This guitar, repaired mid-tour while promoting Nevermind, is a significant piece of rock history.

Renowned guitar technician, Big John Duncan authenticated this instrument, just as he did with Kurt Cobain’s 1969 blue Fender Mustang, which was smashed in the 1990s and sold for €500,000 in 2023. The blue Mustang famously appeared in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video, but this white Stratocaster is legendary for its role in Nirvana’s explosive live performances.
A Legacy Tinged with Tragedy
The auction lands days after the 31st anniversary of Cobain’s death on April 5, 1994, when the 27-year-old took his life with a shotgun. Official reports confirmed a suicide note and a 20-gauge semi-automatic weapon, alongside a heroin kit found at the scene. Yet, theories persist—some fans, backed by investigator Tom Grant, argue murder, pointing to substances in his system. The debate lingers, but the suicide ruling stands.
