Internet slowdowns persist across Pakistan, prompting the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government to consider contacting tech magnate Elon Musk for solutions.

Shafqat Ayaz, Special Assistant to the KP Chief Minister, also disclosed plans to contact other experts, citing the significant impact sluggish internet speeds have had on the region’s IT sector.

Ayaz remarked, “There’s an ongoing internet issue in KP, yet the underlying causes remain unclear.”

Pakistan struggles with chronic internet speed problems, frequently attributing disruptions to submarine cable faults. However, reports suggest the government might be testing a new “firewall,” contributing to these issues.

The development follows Elon Musk’s announcement on his X platform confirming that Starlink, his satellite internet venture, is awaiting government approval to operate in Pakistan. “We are waiting for approval from the government,” Musk stated during a dialogue with Pakistani social media activist Sanam Jamali, highlighting the country’s ongoing internet challenges.

Jamali appealed to Musk to accelerate Starlink’s deployment in Pakistan, emphasizing the transformative potential for connectivity, education, and opportunities that the service could provide to millions.

In response to widespread internet disruptions, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication, mentioned last month that Pakistan was engaging with Starlink to introduce its services locally. “We are in talks with Starlink to bring them to Pakistan,” Khawaja reported during a Senate Standing Committee meeting on IT and Telecommunication.
