Katy Perry is set to briefly depart from ‘American Idol’ to attend and perform at the coronation concert for King Charles III in the United Kingdom.
Perry will sing at the live event, scheduled for the day after the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey, joining other performers such as Andrea Bocelli and Take That to honor the British royal family.
In Perry’s and fellow judge Lionel Richie’s absence, Ed Sheeran and Alanis Morissette will step in as co-judges on ‘American Idol.’ Commenting on the substitute judges, Luke Bryan said, “It’s a big deal, a big deal,” and joked about the numerous times the stand-ins’ songs have been played compared to his own.
With the live broadcast of ‘American Idol’ set for 20:00 ET, many fans questioned how the judges would manage their commitments to the coronation concert and the show. Earlier this week, Perry humorously suggested the possibility of a “hologram.”
Katy Perry had connected with King Charles III since 2020 when she became an ambassador for The British Asian Trust, a charity he established while still the Prince of Wales. Similarly, Lionel Richie has been a global ambassador for Charles III’s philanthropic organization, The Prince’s Trust, since 2019.
