Actor Sharon Stone said quitting cannabis left her ill for about a month, according to a Variety interview published this week.

Stone, 68, said she stopped smoking marijuana as part of an effort to live without drugs. She made the decision after discontinuing the medication prescribed following her 2001 stroke.

“When I stopped smoking pot, I also got sick,” Stone said in the interview, which People reported on July 21.

Stone attributed her concerns partly to changes in cannabis products since she was younger. She said she consulted her neurologist after becoming ill.

However, the interview did not identify Stone’s symptoms or disclose a medical diagnosis. It therefore remains unclear whether a doctor diagnosed her illness as cannabis withdrawal.

The Cleveland Clinic says withdrawal can occur when a person stops using cannabis after regular or heavy use. Symptoms may include irritability, anxiety, insomnia, reduced appetite, headaches, nausea and sweating.

Symptoms typically begin within 24 to 48 hours and peak around the third day. They can persist for three weeks or longer among people who frequently use marijuana.

The clinic says cannabis withdrawal itself does not cause life-threatening symptoms and rarely requires medical care. People with severe symptoms or coexisting health conditions should seek professional advice.

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says THC concentrations have increased over recent decades. Higher concentrations can produce stronger effects, although researchers have not determined all the resulting health consequences.
