The impending impact of cyclone Biparjoy has prompted evacuation plans in Karachi’s sea-facing residential areas.
Despite initial assurances from the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) about the resilience of Emaar Pakistan, a luxury residential project, evacuation orders may be issued if conditions worsen. However, DHA’s mandatory or voluntary evacuation decisions seemed unclear until late Wednesday.
DHA Karachi’s Response and Preparations
The District South deputy commissioner’s office stepped in late on Wednesday, issuing a directive to the DHA’s director of security. This directive called for precautions to be taken in light of the cyclone alert issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. The DHA was requested to ensure the safe evacuation of residents based on their own assessments and recommendations.
In response, the DHA initiated voluntary evacuation and set up Mobile Relief and Recovery Centres (MRRCS) at various locations. DHA also advised residents to store clean water, restrict outdoor movement during the storm, and secure solar panels. Measures were also taken to backfill dug-up areas and install water pumps at various locations to prevent flooding. The DHA’s actions and ongoing vigilance will be crucial in mitigating the potential impact of cyclone Biparjoy.
