Prof. Nasim Ahmed Memon, Chairman of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK), announced that the intermediate exams will start on June 1. Initially scheduled for May 28, the adjustment was necessary as it was not feasible to conduct both matric and intermediate exams simultaneously at the same centres.
Memon disclosed that the board has requested the education minister’s approval to extend the exam schedule by four days. The revised plan proposes conducting intermediate exams in the morning and matric exams in the evening at the same venues.
This rescheduling follows the Sindh government’s decision to delay the intermediate exams by five days due to an intense heatwave affecting the region. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah endorsed the postponement following a recommendation from Muhammad Ali Malkani, the provincial Minister for Universities and Boards.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for Karachi, noting an ongoing spell that has seen temperatures soar.
The department forecasts that the heatwave will intensify, with temperatures expected to rise significantly over the next 10 days. It predicts three heatwaves across various cities in the next 25 days, with severe conditions anticipated in most parts of the country, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, from May 21, intensifying from May 23 to 27. Daytime temperatures in these regions are expected to remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal from May 21 to 23 and could increase by 6 to 8°C from May 23 to 27.
