Jay-Z opened his Roots Picnic set in Philadelphia with a four-minute a cappella freestyle that appeared to target Kanye West, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Dame Dash and others.
The performance took place Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Belmont Plateau. It marked Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter’s first solo-stage return in six years.
Backed by The Roots, Jay-Z used the opening freestyle to respond to years of public comments and disputes without naming every target directly.
Fans linked several lines to Kanye West’s March 2025 X posts about Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s twins, Rumi and Sir. West later apologised in May 2025.
Jay-Z also appeared to answer Drake’s “the jig is up” line from the “Iceman” album track “Janice STFU.” He used the phrase while referencing chart success and music-publishing deals.
Nicki Minaj also appeared to be addressed after years of public criticism of Jay-Z and Roc Nation. The freestyle included references to fans connected to Minaj and her husband, Kenneth Petty.
The performance opened a 31-song set covering Jay-Z’s catalogue. Guests included Bilal on “No Church in the Wild,” Jazmine Sullivan on “Feelin’ It,” Beanie Sigel and Freeway on “Roc the Mic” and “What We Do,” and Meek Mill on “Dreams and Nightmares.”
