FIFA named Ismail Elfath as the referee for England’s World Cup semi-final against defending champions Argentina at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, July 15.
The 44-year-old Moroccan-born American will work alongside United States assistant referees Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins. Italian official Maurizio Mariani will serve as the fourth official.
Elfath’s appointment drew attention in British media because Lionel Messi remains unbeaten in matches the referee has overseen since the Argentina captain joined Inter Miami.
Elfath refereed the 2023 Leagues Cup final, when Messi scored before Inter Miami defeated Nashville SC on penalties. He has also handled further Inter Miami victories in Major League Soccer.
The American served as the fourth official when Argentina beat France on penalties in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. Messi scored twice during the 3-3 draw before Argentina won the shootout.
Some English supporters questioned the selection on social media, while several British publications highlighted Elfath’s record in Messi’s matches. However, no evidence has emerged that the appointment gives either team an advantage.
